MY TUTORING EXPERIENCE

I'm a scientist, experienced private tutor and mentor with a 20+ year professional career spanning academic research, biotechnology and scientific communications.

My experience as both a scientist and tutor allows me to bring subject knowledge together with an understanding of how scientific concepts connect beyond the classroom, while my years of working individually with students have taught me that knowing a subject and knowing how to teach it to the person sitting in front of you are two very different skills.

Alongside my tutoring experience, I am a Qualified Mental Health First Aider and hold a current DBS certificate.

EVERYONE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO LEARN

Throughout my years as a private tutor, one of the most important things I have learned is that when a student is struggling with a subject, it doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't capable of understanding it. Sometimes, they simply haven't yet discovered the way of learning that works best for them.

No two students learn in exactly the same way, which is why I don't believe in taking a one-size-fits-all approach to tutoring. My role is to understand the individual student in front of me: where they are finding things difficult, what they already understand, how they process new information and which approaches help concepts begin to make sense.

Sometimes that means breaking a complicated idea into smaller steps; sometimes it means using diagrams, analogies or real-world examples; and sometimes a student needs the opportunity to talk through an idea, practise applying it or explain it back in their own words before everything begins to fall into place. Where appropriate, I can also offer broader mentoring support alongside tutoring, helping students navigate confidence, wellbeing or decisions about their next steps.

Ultimately, I don't simply want a student to leave our sessions understanding more science. I want them to begin understanding how they learn.

The strategies and confidence they develop through tutoring can then become tools they take into other subjects, further education and whatever comes next.

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINED

Academic confidence can have an enormous influence on how a student approaches learning.

When someone has struggled with a subject for some time, it can be very easy for "I don't understand this yet" to gradually become "I'm just not good at science."

Part of my role as a tutor is to help challenge that assumption.

By providing a supportive environment where students can ask questions without embarrassment, make mistakes without judgement and revisit concepts as many times as necessary, I aim to help students rebuild confidence alongside their scientific understanding.

As a Qualified Mental Health First Aider, I am particularly mindful of the pressures young people can experience around education, examinations and expectations. Tutoring is not counselling or therapy, but my training informs the calm, supportive and non-judgemental environment I aim to create for every student I work with.

HOW TUTORING CAN SUPPORT THE STUDENT

Students come to tutoring for many different reasons, and support does not need to wait until someone is significantly struggling.

A student might benefit from tutoring because they:

  • Have lost confidence in science or a particular topic

  • Have gaps in their knowledge that are making new concepts difficult

  • Understand the content but struggle to translate that knowledge into examination answers

  • Need help developing effective revision and study strategies

  • Are preparing for mocks or final examinations

  • Would benefit from additional challenge or consolidation

  • Feel overwhelmed by the volume of material they need to learn

  • Simply benefit from having dedicated one-to-one time to ask questions and work at their own pace

Our sessions are shaped around the individual rather than following a predetermined tutoring programme, allowing us to focus our time where it can make the greatest difference.

TESTIMONIALS

Farah helped my daughter with her Biology AS and A2 exam preparation and I cannot thank her enough for all her thoughtful, patient, engaging and well focussed guidance. She is a joy to deal with - prompt, reliable and friendly, she has a keen sense of what the student need - and she certainly knows her stuff! I will not hesitate to ask her to tutor my younger daughter should she also choose Biology. Choosing a tutor is typically pot luck, but I can thoroughly recommend Farah in every respect. She is a special lady who gave my daughter the best chance to fulfil her potential, and for that I am very grateful.

Farah supported my son and daughter in preparing for GCSE Sciences and A2 Biology. She has a friendly and lively approach and provided flexible tailored tuition to suit their individual needs. We've seen their confidence grow in the time that she has been working with them - would recommend.

Farah has been a fantastic tutor to my son over the last year (GCSE Combined Science). Farah's lessons are very interactive and motivating and using a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning, my son has gained a much better scientific understanding and has even enjoyed his sciences! I have no reservations about highly recommending Farah as a tutor.

Farah is enthusiastic and well prepared, with a facility for explaining her subjects to my daughter, who has been encouraged by her progress after just a few sessions. Farah is also friendly and approachable and genuinely passionate about helping her tutees to succeed. Highly recommended.

My daughter has now received her GCSE results and obtained an A grade, thanks to Farah's brilliant teaching. My daughter would not have done nearly so well without Farah's help, as she was struggling before Farah began giving her tuition.

HOW PRIVATE TUTORING WORKS

I prefer to provide one-to-one tutoring in person, either at your home or mine, as I believe face-to-face sessions offer the best opportunity for communication, interaction and getting to know how each student learns. Online tutoring is also available where this is more convenient or preferred.

Before we begin, I'll take some time to understand what the student is currently studying, where they feel most and least confident, what they would like help with and what they hope to achieve through tutoring.

From there, sessions are tailored around their individual needs and can evolve as their confidence, understanding and priorities change.

Students are welcome to attend sessions at my home, or I can travel to the student's home within my local tutoring area. Online tuition is also available where this is more convenient or preferred.

The same tuition fees apply whether sessions take place at my home, at the student's home or online.

Home visits within approximately 10 miles of my location are included within the standard tuition fee. For locations further afield, a small travel supplement may apply and will always be discussed and agreed before tutoring begins.

Not sure which option is right for you?

You don't need to commit to a package straight away.

If you're unsure what level of support would be most helpful, please get in touch and tell me a little about the student, where they are in their studies and what they would like help with. We can then discuss whether my approach feels like the right fit.
